My Journey With Health And Fitness – Allowing Myself A Break
Sigh, this is our last full day at the condo. We have already done a thorough cleaning of the condo and are now working on the laundry. We will go to one of our favourite restaurants for lunch and pick up a few things we want to take back (whenever we bring checked luggage we always return home with clear vanilla). It will then be spending some time with our neighbours saying goodbye. I know we are back again in 10 weeks but right now that seems such a long time to wait.
Sunday morning my alarm went off at 5am and I hit the snooze button which is something I normally don’t do. When I went off again I realized I was exhausted so I turned it off completely and went back to sleep. Much to my surprise I slept in until 7:30am (I don’t remember the last time I did that) but I still felt tired. I realized that it was likely because of emotionally exhausting myself the day before after learning of the passing of my aunt. It was then that I decided I needed a break and that I was not going to beat myself up over that decision.
I did also decided that it was time to focus on what I have managed to achieve on this trip. We have been here 38 full days (not including travel days). On 35 of the days we have been here I have worked out and by that I mean often time doing 3 hours of exercising. The only days I skipped were the first day we were here (also known as shopping day), Jan 1st (for obvious reasons) and this past Sunday. I’ve walked as much as 25k steps in a day, stayed on top of my strength training and not once did I waiver on my determination that I have to be able to stay on my fitness regime while I am at the condo. Given that I have been successful over 90% of the days here, I figure that 1 extra day that I missed was ok.
And so, giving myself a break so that I had a chance to recover after devasting news was the right thing to do. Oh, and I will note that I still got in nearly an hour of walking that day so my Fitbit still counted that as a day with at least 30 minutes of exercise so it wasn’t truly a day off.
