My Journey With Health And Fitness – Determined or Crazy, You Decide

March 6, 2026

I’m having problems with my Apple Watch in that it is no longer announcing what split I have completed and at what pace. I have no idea why it has stopped doing this and this information is really important to me because I am so working on improving my slow speed running. Today I was out for an 8 km which is ok because I have a well measured course that I run. When I finished the run I went to change my tracking to outdoor walk and saw my total run time. WTF? I shaved another 5 minutes off my 8km run, that’s 10 minutes down in the past 2 weeks. Apparently even without hearing the pace from my watch I can still kick it up a notch. I’m still a slow runner, just a bit faster than before.

Yesterday the weather sucked. I got home from the gym and there was torrential rain. I got in the house and announced I was not going for a walk before our coffee group as I knew I would be soaked and miserable. Instead I committed to making up the time throughout the day. I thought at the time that it was a wise decision and wasn’t too worried about making up the walking time.

So, I went for coffee with the gang and kept checking my weather app. Sadly it kept pushing back the time as to when the rain would stop. At 9am I realized I just had to suck it up and get out there or I would not be able to get in 4 hours of walking during the day. I headed out in the pouring rain and wondered if I really was going to pull this off. However, I kept walking and a couple hours later I got home relatively dry (note, under my waterproof sports jacket I had on a moisture wicking running jacket). Yes things like my shoes and gloves were wet but it wasn’t horrible.

I headed out again after lunch as I had an appointment uptown. Despite the forecast the rain had not stopped though was slightly better than the earlier walk. I decided I just had to keep focusing on listening to my book and not think about the miserable weather. Once my appointment was done I was off on a final 1 hour walk to finish the day. I fully acknowledge that walking in the rain, especially when it is heavy rain, can be exhausting but I got it done.

Despite the weather I got in a total of 5 hours of activity (including an hour fitness class). I burned 3,000+ calories yesterday and put in 34k steps for a total of 21.23km. I once again closed all my exercise rings and I was pretty proud of myself.

I get that it would not kill me to just take a day but I am in week 3 of really pushing myself and I refuse to lose my momentum. Sadly they are saying tomorrow it will rain all day and yet I will still do everything I can to meet all of my goals for the day. I look at it as being determined though many around me say I am crazy. Either way, I am still going to get ‘er done.
